OTTAWA – House of PainT Festival of Arts and Culture and the Youth Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (YOCISO) partnered under the City of Ottawa’s PainT It Up Program to create a new mural on a well-known corner in Centretown.

Youth involved in this project come from YOCISO’s diverse set of programs, including the Newcomer Orientation Camp (NOC) engaging refugees from Syria, Ukraine and the Republic of Congo.

Councillor Catherine McKenney championed Crime Prevention Ottawa’s Paint It Up! graffiti program for youth and will provide remarks during the mural unveiling.

This PainT It Up mural project was facilitated by celebrated local visual artist Dominic Laporte. The vision and concept for the mural was created by inviting youth to explore what Decolonize meant to them as new Canadians in 5 languages. The aim is to demonstrate how Hip Hop culture helps youth experience healthy community integration and access avenues of expression.

The unveiling of the mural will coincide with the 13th House of PainT Festival of Arts and Culture, reflecting this year’s theme: “Decolonize,” taking place from Aug. 25-28 in Ottawa. House of PainT looks forward to expanding its educational activities and providing mentorship and work opportunities for youth during this year’s Knowledge Conference.

Media are invited to attend the mural unveiling this Friday, Aug. 26 at 1:30pm in front of Domestic Foods, 595 Gladstone Ave and Percy. Interviews with General Manager Patrick McCormack are available upon request.
